A first tramp for a few kids probably. Nice and close to the road end, in a gorgeous wee valley.
Located: Mikonui Valley, near Ross. From SH8, drive up the Totara valley. Map – BV18.
Access: Benched track and river flats with a river crossing. About 4km, around 1hour adult walking time.
Hut features: Standard 6 bunk. Reasonable condition. Good working fire. Lovely creek next to hut and track over to Upper Tuke provides a good day walk, beautiful gorge.
Negatives: Sandflies are a bit of a problem (we were grateful for the net we had) but mostly okay with door shut. River crossing – we were there late summer and hardly got our boots wet but as with all unbridged rivers, take care and be aware of the potential to rise.
