Access: Most of the track to this hut is along the Kepler Track, so is very well formed, wide and easy to follow. The last section is along the beach. We parked at the Rainbow Reach carpark and walked from there. It took us 1 hr 40 minutes to get to the hut, carrying a one year old. It is about 4.5 km.
It is also possible to get to the hut by boat.
Hut features: This is a standard six bunk hut, with individual bunk beds. Two of the bunks were quite short, but the rest were longer. The hut has three small bench seats and an open fire. It has a lovely lake front location and we spent the afternoon swimming and playing in the sand. Water is sourced from the lake.
There are lots of places outside the hut to camp, and if I was to come here again in summer, I’d choose to camp. There are also BBQs and seats outside.
Negatives: The hut looks like it gets a bit of abuse and has been patched up many times. There are lots of sandflies and mosquitos in summer, and no screens on the windows.
