Packhorse Hut, Ōtautahi (Christchurch)/Banks Peninsula

Location: Start either from Gebbes Pass Rd (on Lyttleton side) or Parkinsons Road, off Kaituna Valley Road. Both about 1/2hr drive from Ōtautahi (Chch).

The Tramp: There are two standard routes to reach this hut:

  • Gebbies Pass: (DoC time of 2 hours and ‘the easiest way’). The track is exposed to all weathers, so can be windy, cold and prone to low cloud in poor weather. Aisling writes: from the Gebbies Pass side, the tramp took us about 3.5 hrs with lots of stops and breaks. Gebbies Pass had a lot of trees taken out at the time we did it so Kaituna Valley track may be more scenic. It’s meant to be shorter but steeper than Gebbies.
  • Kaituna Valley: (DoC time 1:20hr, detailed route description on DoC website). Be aware that there is a small stream crossing (but remember all waterways can flood) and ongaonga (native stinging neetle) which is cut back but good to be aware of!

The Hut: A nice 9 bunk stone hut. On the booking system. Small communal area, with firewood provided. Lovely views over Lyttleton esp at night and sunrise views the next morning. Long drop toilet is a few metres from the hut. Adults $15/night, children under 10years free.
