An short fun walk to an ‘interesting’ hut not too far from Dunedin.
Location: Trotters Gorge, off SH1 between Palmerston and Moeraki, Otago.
Access: Approximately 1.5km on an easy flat/undulating track. Multiple river crossings which the kids thought was great fun. Beautiful gorge with great swimming holes which we didn’t make the most of 😦 Took us 50mins on the way in (with lots of map reading and splashing), 25mins on way out the next day.
Hut features: The hut is has notable pros and cons – its large and not well-maintained so not particularly warm and I think some mossies came in during the night. It also has significant graffiti which was fine as our kids couldn’t read when we visited 😉 Pros – it can be booked so you’ll be the only ones there, it’s got heaps of mattresses which the kids treated like a trampoline park. There’s an outdoor covered space as well (see photo) and lots of room for camping. Plus an gorgeous wee river for paddling, throwing stones, and general fun just near the hut.
The hut is owned by the University of Otago, run by Recreation Services – current fees can be found at this link:
