Aspiring Hut, West Matukituki Valley

IMG_7257
Located:
West Matukituki Valley, head of Lake Wanaka. Follow the road around the lake to the Treble Cone skifield then keep on driving. Road ends at the Raspberry Creek carpark.
Access: 3 hours adult time (including slower for 1/2 the time with the 3-year old walking). Mostly flat open meadows with stunning views of the Rob Roy glacier and waterfalls. Lots of friendly cattle to moo at.
Hut features: The hut has a warden over the summer months. Gas stoves supplied in the summer. There is a log burner and wood. 2 large bunk rooms and a roomy living, dining kitchen area. There is a small stream and ‘plunge pool’ 100 metres from the hut. Worth the sandfly bites!
It’s great if you can go in for two nights and walk up to Pearl Flat at the head of the valley on day 2 where you enter Mt Aspiring National Park. This trip is interesting for kids with more variety; bridges, streams to cross, beech forest, and incredible views.
NB: It is good to get an early start heading to Aspiring Hut because you cannot book. This may change as it is getting so busy. There were babies and toddlers in there both nights so if your kids are great sleepers I would suggest earplugs – the kids sleep through the crying. This is an Alpine Club hut managed by DOC. The cost is $30 ($15 Alpine club members) per adult, kids free. If you are going in late in the day take a tent.

  1. Hello and Congratulations on your wonderful site! I wish there had been a site like this when my kids were little. But as a recent retiree with a very slow walking pace (similar to that of a four year old) this site is perfect for helping me find beautiful walks that are within my capacities. So Thank you! Also the website is really easy to use and the descriptions and directions are excellent. My only suggestion is that when you mention distances in terms of walking hours you might also include kilometres, so that people with a non-standard walking pace like me can easily work out how long it will take us. I am looking forward to trying out your tracks and to sharing the scenery with a few intrepid little people.

    • Thank you for your feedback and apologies for the tardy reply. I’d never thought about it’s utility for ‘older’ walkers but so glad it is helpful. Hopefully you can be relied on not to disturb other hut users too much 😉 I do try to include distances in kilometres when I am provided with them or get round to calculating it myself but I will endeavour to try and make this happen for all huts. Thanks and enjoy the hills 🙂 Jo
